Sending money abroad, or bringing it back to Brazil, takes more than an exchange rate. There is spread, there is tax (IOF), there are fees, timing and paperwork. These parts almost always show up separately, and the final math gets left for later.

This blog exists to do that math with you, with the source of every number in plain sight.

What comes out every week

  • Monday: This week in FX. Friday’s PTAX, the Focus survey forecast for the dollar at year-end, and what changed during the week. Always side by side: the actual data and the expectation.
  • Wednesday: How to calculate. The real cost of a transfer, step by step: VET, IOF, spread, fees, commercial and tourist rates. With this week’s numbers.
  • Friday: Brazilians abroad. One destination or situation at a time (United States, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Japan): cost of living, local exchange rate and paperwork, always with an official source.
  • Saturday: the Spanish and English versions of the week’s articles.

When the Central Bank of Brazil changes interest rates, when the Fed decides, when the IOF tax changes or when the dollar jumps, there is an extra article.

How we work

  • Every number has a source and a date. We prefer the official source: Central Bank of Brazil, Receita Federal and each country’s statistics office.
  • Every calculation is redone from scratch before publishing.
  • Informational content: nothing here is a promise of returns or a recommendation to make a transaction.
